
Ever seen
Indonesian batik cloth? Here's the marvelous tool that helps create its detailed designs: the
cap (pronounced "chop"), or batik press. A copper implement about six inches square, it is heated and pressed onto white cloth coated with a layer of wax. The cap pushes the wax out of the way, leaving its pattern on the cloth. Dye is applied, coloring the waxless pattern.
